Dropbox hacked in 2012, 68 million accounts circulate online today

Here's the latest proof that virtually nobody seems able to provide adequate user data security: Hackers stole the details of nearly 70 million user accounts from Dropbox, the file storage service.

Tech website Motherboard reported on Wednesday (Aug 31) that it had obtained email addresses and hashed passwords for more than 68 million Dropbox accounts through "sources in the database trading community".

The breach was previously analyzed by Troy Hunt, a security expert from Australia, who saw the data.

We say harder, not impossible and for that reason Dropbox has forced a password reset on users that might have been impacted by the breach. The company told NBC that it had not detected any malicious access to affected accounts, which allow users to upload, download and share files.

Last week, the company asked users who signed up before mid-2012 to change their passwords if they haven't done so since then, describing it as a preventive measure and not because there was any indication that their accounts were improperly accessed.

Back in 2012 where the breach happened, the company announced that the hackers were obtaining credentials from the accounts and it affected the company's senior staff too. While Dropbox did not reveal the number of accounts facing mandatory resets, the decision to reset passwords was taken out of precaution, Dropbox wrote recently.

Dropbox said it's shoring up security, has mandated two-factor authentication for all its internal systems and has licensed secure password management software to ensure all of its employees are utilizing strong passwords. To reset Spotify password, go to account page on the website and change password or go to password reset page to enter your email address or username. Despite this and the password reset initiative, Dropbox urges proactive action for its users.

A majority of these recovered user credentials belonged to legitimate users who had registered at Dropbox during 2012 and earlier, Leakbase, a web leak-tracker service, informed Motherboard.
