A century after the National Park Service was created, it is now responsible for more than 400 park locations covering more than 84 million acres across the country.

In celebration of the 100-year-anniversary of the National Park Service, CBS 5 reports that all entry fees have been waived.

One hundred years after Woodrow Wilson signed the Organic Act of 1916, the park service's mission to preserve our nation's historic sites and landmarks continues to thrive. The first 1,000 participants were allowed to keep their umbrellas and got T-shirts commemorating the event.

Mike Reynolds, deputy director of the National Park Service, said there is something for everyone in the system. "And we want people to bring someone with them", said Nathan Sargent with the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Yosemite, located in California's Sierra Nevada Mountains, sort of became the became the first national park in the U.S.in the 1800s, according to National Geographic, when President Lincoln put Yosemite under the protection of California during the Civil War.

Entrance to Joshua Tree National Park will be free for four days starting today in honor of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service.

The closest national parks to Houston are the Guadalupe Mountains in West Texas (about a nine-hour drive) and Big Bend along the Rio Grande (eight and a half hours away).

All of them are free through Sunday, August 28th, in celebration of the Centennial, so get out and "park it" somewhere. Later that evening, a film series showcasing lesser-known national parks and monuments will be held at the Arches National Park visitor center, beginning at 7 p.m. Capt. Randall Peck said it's important for his crew members to be familiar with the namesake park and know the resilience of the Ancestral Puebloan people who lived there.
