Before heading into the 2012-13 NBA season, veteran point guard Jason Kidd agreed to sign with the New York Knicks after another stint with the Dallas Mavericks. Kidd accomplished his ultimate goal with the Mavs winning an NBA title in 2011, but chose to head elsewhere in free agency with the Knicks welcoming the veteran with open arms.
After 19 seasons in the NBA, Kidd felt it was time to walk away from the game. The veteran floor general indicated a desire to play out his current contract with the Knicks after New York was knocked out of the NBA playoffs by the Indiana Pacers in six games during the second round.
Although it seemed to be a foregone conclusion Kidd would be back with the Knicks next season, the veteran decided it was time to walk away freeing up a roster spot. Raymond Felton and international import Pablo Prigioni benefited from the presence and the knowledge trickled down from Kidd, but the veteran knew it was time to end a career that will almost certainly put him into the Hall of Fame.
During his 19 seasons in the league, Kidd has played for four different teams including the Mavs, Phoenix Suns, New Jersey Nets and Knicks. Kidd’s most successful stretch as an elite player in the league came with the Nets by leading New Jersey to the NBA Finals twice, but failed to come out on top.
With Kidd officially calling it a career, it will only be a matter of time before he’s elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame and sees his jersey hanging in Brooklyn for the Nets and or in Dallas for his time with the Mavs.
Along with Kidd calling it a career, fellow Rookie of the Year Grant Hill also decided to retire after 19 years. Hill and Kidd won Co-Rookie of the Year honors back in 1995.
