The Boston Celtics are a fiery basketball squads filled with scrappy veterans and up-and-coming rookies taking notes on how to maintain a successful career in the NBA. Along with takes notes from some of the best in the business including Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo, these rookies are also learning how physical the game can be when things get heated between veterans.
On Wednesday night against the Brooklyn Nets, Rondo lost his cool after a hard foul from Kris Humphries on Garnett. Humphries smacked Garnett in the face while defending his shot on the baseline. Garnett fell down hard and Rondo reacted immediately getting into a shoving match up the basket.
Rondo and Humphries started a bit of a brawl on Wednesday with Garnett and Nets forward Gerald Wallace also retaliating. As a result, Rondo has been suspended for two games for his role in the altercation with Humphries.
Wallace and Garnett were also penalized by the league for their roles in the fight on Wednesday. Garnett was fined $25,000 while Wallace received a stiffest fine of $35,000.
Rondo insists that he was only sticking up for his teammates when things started to get too physical. If roles were reversed, it’d be no surprise to see Garnett make the same reaction.
The Celtics are no strangers to this kind of physical play with an old school mentality. This isn’t the first time head coach Doc Rivers has seen this kind of play out of his current squad and probably won’t be the last.
With the Nets emerging as legitimate threats in the Atlantic division, Boston and Brooklyn will likely turn into a heated rivalry with the two teams battling it out for the division crown all season long.
