The NFL off-season has been rough to say the least for the New England Patriots with a number of injuries and one very important player heading to another team in free agency.
The first domino to fall for the Patriots during the end of last season was All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski going down with a broken arm for the second time. Gronkowski was forced to have surgery for the second time resulting in the perennial Pro Bowler missing the rest of the playoffs.
Without Gronkowski in the lineup, the Patriots ultimately fell to the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship game missing an opportunity to win another Super Bowl with Tom Brady under center and Bill Belichick calling the shots from the sidelines.
Along with Gronkowski dealing with persistent issues with his rehab process, the Patriots lost perennial Pro Bowl wideout Wes Welker in free agency. Welker decided to sign with the Denver Broncos over New England leaving the Patriots to sign Danny Amendola as a secondary option.
As if things weren’t getting bad enough for New England during the off-season, tight end Aaron Hernandez also had surgery during the off-season. Hernandez reportedly had shoulder surgery early in the off-season and may not make it back for training camp.
With Hernandez and Gronkowski recovering from surgeries and Welker moving onto the Mile High City, the Patriots will look much different next season with a new-look offense that may not be suitable for Brady. Although Brady is one of the best quarterbacks in the league in terms of turning nobodies into somebodies, the veteran gunslinger will have his work cut out for him in 2013 with the team potentially starting to drop off if the tight ends can’t get back to form and Amendola turns out to be a bust.
