Once the NFL off-season officially got underway, all the buzz and speculation in the league surrounded the pending free agency of wide receiver Mike Wallace. With the Pittsburgh Steelers passing on the opportunity to re-sign arguably one of the most promising young wideouts in the NFL, every team in the league with a need at the wide receiver position started sending offers in Wallace’s direction.
Although plenty of teams were interested in Wallace’s services and were willing to pay his high asking price, the young wide receiver seemed destined to sign a multi-year deal with the Miami Dolphins. Miami was looking for the right player to add the receiving corps in order to give second-year quarterback Ryan Tannehill the talent needed to take it to the next level in 2013.
The Dolphins made the first move by re-signing Brian Hartline, but adding Wallace was considered the team’s highest priority. Despite a number of suitors, Wallace ended up signing with the Dolphins for $60 million.
The one team that was considered the toughest competition for the Dolphins was the Minnesota Vikings. Although the Vikings ultimately ended up with the second-best free agent option at wide receiver in Greg Jennings, Minnesota wanted Wallace.
Apparently, the Vikings did everything within their power to bring in arguably one of the best deep threats in the NFL by offering $76 million to Wallace. Jennings isn’t a bad consolation after failing to sign Wallace, but it’s clear the team was very high on the former Steelers wideout.
Wallace claims that money isn’t everything when asked about his reasoning behind not signing with the Vikings. Despite that statement from the former free agent, playing and living in Minnesota opposed to playing and living in Miami may have been the difference-maker and for good reason.
