Heading into Week 15, the Green Bay Packers were three games away from completing the perfect regular season. Even though the Detroit Lions looked to be their toughest challenge left on their remaining schedule, the Kansas City Chiefs turned out to be just too much to handle for both the Packers offense and defense.
All season long, despite winning the first 13 games of the regular season, the Packers have been questionable in terms of how good they are on the defensive side of the football. Last season Green Bay was without a doubt in the conversation as one of the best defenses in the league, but this season they just haven’t been able to reclaim their form and as a result have been flawed.
Against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 15, the undefeated Green Bay Packers were favored by -15 and the consensus around the league was that they could cover such a spread. With the offense looking unstoppable at times with quarterback Aaron Rodgers having an MVP caliber season, scoring hasn’t been a problem until they went head-to-head against the banged up Chiefs’ defense.
Without Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry (out for the season), the Kansas City Chiefs defense just hasn’t been as good as it was last season; similar to the Green Bay Packers. With that being said, the Packers should have torched the secondary, but apparently this team was motivated to do the impossible and hand this team their first loss of the season.
Along with the Chiefs’ defense coming to play, the Kansas City offense was much better than anticipated with veteran quarterback Kyle Orton getting his first start in a Chiefs’ uniform. Orton seemed to be the missing piece to the puzzle for the Chiefs as he had the offense firing on all cylinders all day long and eventually led them to a 19-14 victory.
Kyle Orton finished with 299 yards on 23-of-31 passing. Even though he failed to throw a touchdown pass, Orton was the key to victory for the Chiefs and may have created a quarterback controversy for next season with Matt Cassel.
