The Baltimore Ravens were able to live up to the hype this season as up-and-coming quarterback Joe Flacco was able to lead his team all the way to the AFC Championship game. Unfortunately, the Ravens fell to the New England Patriots in that game and failed to reach the Super Bowl. Baltimore is still a team on the rise in the NFL with a great chance of competing for a Super Bowl title over the next half decade or so, but they will be one man short from here on out as veteran running back Ricky Williams has officially retired from the NFL.
After 11 seasons in the NFL, Ricky Williams has played for three different teams including the New Orleans Saints, Miami Dolphins and the Baltimore Ravens. Even though Williams never really turned into the kind of running back that many thought he would, the former number one overall pick still ended his career with some impressive numbers with 74 total touchdowns (66 rushing, 8 receiving) and 12,615 total yards (10,009 rushing, 2,606 receiving).
There is no question that the best part of Ricky Williams’ 11-year career in the NFL came during his time with the Miami Dolphins. Williams had his best season in the league in his first year (2002) with the Dolphins in which he rushed for a career-high 1,853 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns. After 2002, Williams’ numbers began to decline and eventually fell off, but he did have a resurgence of sorts back in 2009 with the Dolphins rushing for 1,121 yards and 11 touchdowns.
The consensus around the NFL is that Ricky Williams could have been something more in the league and might have ultimately been one of the greatest backs to ever play the game, but despite failing to live up to expectations the former Texas star had a solid career in the NFL.
