Chargers @ Steelers Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012 1 p.m. ET
Once Ben Roethlisberger went down with rib and shoulder injuries in the win over the Kansas City Chief back in Week 10, the Pittsburgh Steelers began to struggle with two consecutive losses to the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns. Backups Byron Leftwich and Charlie Batch simply couldn’t cut in these two weeks and as a result the season’s outlook no longer looked as promising.
After Leftwich went down with similar injuries in comparison to Roethlisberger, head coach Mike Tomlin had to turn to the 37-year-old Batch with disappointing results. Batch threw three interceptions in the loss to the Browns and many believed the season was on the brink of getting out of control for the Steelers with no timetable for Roethlisberger’s return to the field.
Fortunately, Batch was able to bounce back from the loss to Cleveland with an impressive showing against Baltimore in Week 13. The Steelers shocked everyone by going into Baltimore last Sunday night and coming out on top with Batch under center.
As a result of the win over Baltimore, the Steelers are back in the playoff hunt once again. Along with the promising result against the Ravens, Pittsburgh also received some good news with Roethlisberger likely to get back on the gridiron in Week 14 against the San Diego Chargers at Heinz Field on Sunday.
The Chargers have been a disappointing team once again this season with a 5-7 record coming into this showdown with the Steelers. San Diego has little chance of getting back into playoff contention with the team continuing to fall apart under head coach Norv Turner.
As of right now, the Steelers are the favorites in Week 14 with a -7 point spread. Pittsburgh will likely keep up their winning ways this weekend with Roethlisberger most likely getting the start.
Take the Steelers at -7.
