The New York Jets have been one of the busiest teams in the NFL as of late with some free agent signings that could make them a Super Bowl title contender next season once again. The first move they made was without a doubt the smartest and most important of the offseason as they re-signed their best wide receiver in free agent Santonio Holmes. The deal locked up Holmes for the next five years, but it would have much less of an impact if the Jets didn’t sign another wideout or re-sign Braylon Edwards.
Instead of taking the gamble on Braylon Edwards for similar money to Santonio Holmes, the New York Jets elected to try their luck with Plaxico Burress. Even though Burress hasn’t played for two years and will almost certainly be rusty, the veteran wide receiver could make an impact right out of the gate considering that he signed just a one-year deal with his new team.
Reportedly, the one-year deal is worth a little over $3 million dollars. This is similar to the contract that superstar quarterback Michael Vick signed with the Philadelphia Eagles right after he was released from prison.
There is no telling at this point whether or not Plaxico Burress can be the same game-changing wide receiver he used to be while playing with the New York Giants, but the New York Jets are willing to take the gamble. There is a good chance this gamble will pay off as he will be playing across from Santonio Holmes in the New York Jets offense which seems to improve with every passing season.
Quarterback Mark Sanchez was no doubt extremely excited about the signing of Plaxico Burress as it makes his receiving corps one of the best in the league for the second straight season.
