Over the past few weeks of the NFL regular season, the Chicago Bears have gone from a team destined to make a run at clinching a playoff spot in the NFC Conference to a team that has completely fallen apart with season-ending injuries to key players. With franchise quarterback Jay Cutler going down with a broken thumb, the Bears have been forced to go with backup Caleb Haine under center and so far the results are two straight losses.
As if the injury to Jay Cutler and Caleb Haine’s poor play wasn’t bad enough, the Chicago Bears may have lost Pro Bowl caliber running back Matt Forte as well. In the loss to the Kansas City Chiefs (10-3) in Week 13, the Bears’ running back went down with a knee injury that might keep him on the sidelines for the rest of the season. Head coach Lovie Smith is confident that Forte’s injury isn’t serious enough to keep him out and that the star running back will return, but this seems to be wishful thinking.
With a 7-5 record heading into Week 14, the Chicago Bears are still in playoff contention with a slight chance to be one of the two teams in the NFC Wild Card, but there is a lot of uncertainty that Haine will be the quarterback to lead them into the playoffs.
Reportedly, former Green Bay Packer and Minnesota Viking Brett Favre is ready to come out of retirement once again and sign with the Chicago Bears for the rest of the season. This report comes out of left field, but something the Bears could consider with the offense struggling.
Whether or not there is any truth to these reports of Favre willing to join the Bears remains to be seen, but it wouldn’t surprise me as it would give the future Hall of Famer one more shot at getting the best of the Green Bay Packers by ruining their perfect season.
