Record-breaking Lorenzo beats Rossi for San Marino MotoGP pole

So spoke Jorge Lorenzo after the qualifying session at Misano, for the 2016 Grand Prix of San Marino and Riveira de Rimini.

The Yamaha star is joined on the front row in Sunday's race by his teammate and local hero Valentino Rossi, and Suzuki's British GP victor Maverick Vinales.

The pole at Misano is his 64th in the world championship - taking him one above Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) and Rossi in the record books as the most in GP history. Joining him on the second row are the Ducati Team duo of Michele Pirro, replacing Andrea Iannone, and Andrea Dovizioso.

However, once he changed the tyre, he was able to do even better, stopping the clock with a record time of 1.31 " 898, that translates as nearly 2 tenths better than the 1.32:146 the Yamaha rider set on the way to obtaining last year's pole: "I wanted to be immediately aggressive and pushed hard.

However, Lorenzo has traditionally excelled at this venue, recording three successive wins from 2011 to 2013 and earning a top-three spot on every occasion prior to crashing out of last year's race.

"That was the best lap of my career", beamed Mallorca-born Lorenzo.

In the MotoGP standings, Marquez leads Rossi by 50 points, with Lorenzo 64 points back.

Rossi had produced a great lap on his second attempt to go second in the times, only for race organisers to cancel it as he had gone off the circuit.

Maverick Viñales moved onto the front row to knock Marquez back on his second run, as the paddock's most recent victor took his Team Suzuki Ecstar team back to the front once again; the warmer temperatures not proving as hard for the Suzuki as feared.

South African Brad Binder can move a step closer to the Moto3 title as he holds a seemingly insurmountable 86-point lead over nearest rival Jorge Navarro.
