Denver LB Brandon Marshall takes a knee during anthem

10 September 2025

He played in nine games last season and had more turnovers than touchdowns. The days leading up to the line-up of season openers had fans wondering if players would follow in Colin Kaepernick's footsteps.

So it should come as no surprise that it came up during last night's National Football League season opener between the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers.

The NFL's opening week resumes Sunday with 13 games and some players, including Seattle receiver Doug Baldwin and defensive end Cliff Avril have said they are considering not standing during the national anthem before their game against Miami.

In a post-game press conference after the Broncos managed a tight 21-20 win over their Super Bowl 50 rivals, Marshall told reporters he didn't just take a knee - but will also donate "an undisclosed amount" of money to US military veterans. "Honestly, I'm a man of faith so I prayed about it long and hard and I feel like that was the right thing to do".

Who will be the next Miss America? Chris Harrison and Sage Steele will be hosting the 96th annual pageant. Miss New Mexico Stephanie Chavez said parents should help children read as an enjoyable hobby.

"We send them off to war and they come back and it's like they don't get a lot of help". "Some people are going to stand by me, some people aren't". So I applaud him for taking a stand and hopefully the conversation is about what his message was and not, 'Is he going to stand or is he going to sit for the national anthem?' ...

One of Kaepernick's preseason anthem protests coincided with "Salute the Military Night", which saw 240 sailors, Marines and soldiers present a US flag and a pre-game parachute jump by retired Navy SEALS ahead of a game in San Diego.

Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said he is supportive of Marshall's decision not to stand.

The Air Academy Federal Credit Union said Marshall has terminated its sponsorship with Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall. "He told me to believe in my values and those types of things in life and obviously I believe in our country and the national anthem very strongly".
