Senior Syrian rebel leader 'killed' near Aleppo

10 September 2025

A senior military commander of the former Jabhat al-Nusra rebel group in Syria has been killed in air strike targeting Islamist leaders.

Abu Omar Saraqib of the Syria Conquest Front was killed in an air raid on the outskirts of Aleppo late Thursday, rebels said.

Al-Nusra which was formerly known as Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, changed its name at the end of July and reportedly cut ties with Al-Qaeda at the same time.

Along with other leaders, the jihadist figure set up Jaish al Fateh or the army of conquest - a military alliance of Islamist rebel groups that previous year drove the Syrian army from the northwestern city of Idlib at the height of insurgents' advances.

According to the al-Jazeera, the US-led anti-terror coalition was behind the strike, making it the first US-led airstrike to target Jaish al-Fateh.

A militant source told Reuters the fighters were in a secret hideout in the village of Kafr Naha.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to find a lasting truce in Syria's complex civil war have so far proved fruitless.

US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov have been trying to reach a deal on deeper cooperation on Syria, particularly in their raids on the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS).

The Syrian Observatory for Human rights, a UK-based group which draws its information from activists on the ground, said an air strike from unknown warplanes had hit a meeting of Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, killing Sarakeb and another military commander named as Abu Muslem al-Shami.

He went on to become a key commander of Al-Nusra Front in Syria.

The group in reaction, stated in it's newspaper Al-naba, that his death would not harm it, and his killers would face torment.
