The storm is expected to cross into the US near Tucson, Arizona, later Wednesday morning or early afternoon, bringing with it heavy rains and high winds. The area has seen about 0.9 inches of rain, meteorologist Emily French said.

Although it packed a punch, Newton did not bring the same level of destruction to Los Cabos as Hurricane Odile, which devastated parts of the luxury resort region in September 2014.

While the storm will be weakening, locally damaging winds will be possible across northern Baja California Sur, southern Baja California and western Sonora. The U.S. National Hurricane Center predicted Newton could leave the peninsula and enter the gulf during the night.

The tropical storm is expected to dump several inches of rain on the United States., according to the National Hurricane Center.

After coming ashore for the first time early yesterday, the storm uprooted trees and shattered windows, leaving two dead in Baja California, as thousands of tourists hunkered down in hotels in the Los Cabos resort area.

A deadly tropical storm system made landfall in Mexico for the second time on Wednesday as it made its way toward the US border. The boat had set out from the port of Ensenada and was bound for Mazatlan. "These rains could cause flooding and mudslides".

About 14,000 tourists were in Los Cabos during the storm, tourism officials said, and visitors began venturing out after Newton passed.

Palm trees were toppled along the town's coastal boulevard and some windows were broken.
