Palestinian President Abbas says no meeting with Israeli PM Netanyahu in Moscow

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas said Tuesday that an aide to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's had suggested delaying a proposed meeting between the two leaders in Moscow on Friday.

I will visit Israel and the Palestinian Territories from 3 to 5 September to reaffirm the strength of the Australia-Israel bilateral relationship and to discuss the Middle East peace process and Australia's development assistance to the Palestinian Territories.

Included within their assistance, the Netherlands will hold meetings between Dutch, Israeli and Palestinian officials, with a goal of discussing and, in turn, helping to improve the Palestinian economy.

Some Dutch politicians, such as former Dutch prime minister and pro-Palestinian activist Dries van Agt, have reacted less than warmly to the news of Netanyahu's visit.

Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu will visit Australia next year after accepting an invitation from Foreign Minister Julie Bishop. "If they agree to drop those conditions, the meeting will take place; it doesn't matter to me where, in Holland or Moscow".

"We continue to maintain contacts and to consult with both parties to reach an agreement on the form, content and date of the meeting", Bogdanov said.

Abbas, speaking at a press conference in Warsaw after meeting Polish President Andrzej Duda, explained the meeting had been proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Pushing peace forward needs full Israeli commitment to halting settlements, release prisoners arrested before signing Oslo peace accords in 1994 and ending the Israeli occupation and establishing a Palestinian state", said Abdul Rahim.

"The real question is whether Abu Mazen is willing to meet us without preconditions and we are hearing conflicting reports on that", he said.

A recent peace bid by France to hold a peace summit in Paris was accepted by the Palestinians but rejected by Israel. It was unclear whether the United States, the traditional sponsor of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, was supporting the new Russian initiative.
