British Airways computer problem causes delays

08 September 2025

British Airways passengers are suffering delays globally because of a computer glitch in the check-in systems, the latest in a string of technical failures to hit major worldwide airlines.

On Monday, customers in the USA and Canada reported delays at several airports due to IT problems.

Responding to passengers on Twitter, the airline wrote: " We apologise to our customers for the delay and we appreciate their patience as our IT teams work to resolve this issue".

A British Airways spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider that the delays were caused by a problem with the airline's check-in system and only affected flights coming in from the US.

Staff with clipboards were writing manual boarding passes for passengers, one delayed traveller at Seattle Airport said. BA later confirmed there was a problem as airport staff were forced to manually process check-ins.

At least two people died and three more went missing after their shrimp boat capsized in the Gulf of California during the storm. A deadly tropical storm system made landfall in Mexico for the second time on Wednesday as it made its way toward the US border.

Customers showed their frustration online as multiple airports around the United States experienced these technical issues.

Ewan Crawford, of Glasgow, who was waiting at Chicago O'Hare International Airport for a flight to Heathrow, tweeted: " Never a good sign when they deliver water to the gate!

Dozens of flights to and from London City Airport, near the heart of the British capital's financial district, were canceled or diverted after a small number of activists from the group Black Lives Matter staged a sit-in, blocking the airport's only runway for several hours.

On Tuesday morning, London time, the British Airways said their flights are returning back to normal. "We would encourage customers to check in online before they reach the airport", it said in a statement to IT Pro.

This disruption was seen nearly a month after Delta (DAL) experienced a computer glitch that led to around 2,000 flight cancellations worldwide, according to CNN. Southwest Airlines which faced similar problems in July, had to cancel about 2,300 flights over the course of four days.
