A law enforcement official told The Associated Press earlier Saturday that a person of interest in Jacob's abduction took authorities to a field in central Minnesota last week.
A masked gunman abducted Jacob Wetterling in October 1989 near his St. Joseph home, about 80 miles northwest of Minneapolis.
Though authorities pursued numerous leads trying to track down Jacob or his kidnapper, it wasn't until last year that a suspect was named: 53-year-old Danny Heinrich, who was tied to another case of a Sterns County boy's kidnapping and sexual assault. The Stearns County Sheriff's Office, assisted by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the FBI, the Stearns County Attorney's Office and the United States Attorney's Office are now in the process of reviewing and evaluating new evidence in the Jacob Wetterling investigation.
The Stearns County Sheriff's Office said Saturday that dental records confirmed that the remains were Jacob's.
Law enforcement sources say last week, Heinrich told the Federal Bureau of Investigation where Wetterling's remains were located as part of an ongoing plea agreement. Jacob was abducted, and the two other boys were let go.
Days after the tragic news broke that authorities found Jacob Wetterling's body, his mother Patty Wetterling, released a statement to the media this (Monday) morning in reaction to the news.
USA and Russian Federation far apart on Syria peace and ceasefire
In return, the United States would coordinate with Russian Federation against Al-Qaeda, the letter said, without elaborating. A senior USA state department official said earlier that a ceasefire deal could be announced as early as today.
Authorities said they would provide more details later this week.
Heinrich, of Annandale, was questioned in 1990 about a series of sex assaults including Scheierl's case, and the Wetterling case, but was never formally charged. No charges can be filed in that case, however, as the statute of limitations has passed.
At the time of his arrest past year, as he had done since 1989, Heinrich insisted he was innocent in Jacob's disappearance.
Officials with the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center posted a statement on its website Saturday, saying they are in "deep grief".
The abduction of the 11-year-old boy led to the 1994 Jacob Wetterling Crimes Against Children and Sexually Violent Offender Registration Act, which requires states to maintain sex offender registries and guidelines. "I know how painful it is and I just wanted to stop", Newberg said. "Our hearts are heavy, but we are being held up by all of the people who have been a part of making Jacob's Hope a light that will never be extinguished".
