Dozens of people have held a rally in the USA state of California to protest against sexual violence after a former Stanford University student who raped an unconscious woman was released from prison after spending only three months behind bars.
In a January 28 police report, Turner admitted to having sexual contact with the victim but denied that it wasn't consensual.
The former Sanford University student and swim team star left Santa Clara Jail in San Jose, California with a paper bag filled with his belongings while news cameras filmed.
Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith expressed frustration with the sentencing in a brief statement following Turner's release. OH prison officials have agreed to take over monitoring Turner, and he is required to register as a sex offender with Greene County Sheriff Gene Fischer.
The maximum sentence for his crime was 10 years while he got only six months. They and others attending a demonstration outside the jail called for him to resign Friday. Turner served half of his original six-month sentence due to good behavior and began serving his three years of parole on Friday.
Because of that, the ballot measure could mean less time in prison for people like Turner, prosecutors say.
His victim did not receive justice, shouted Michele Dauber, a law professor leading a recall effort against Persky.
In June, judge Aaron Persky sentenced Turner to only six months in prison, followed by three years probation.
Turner must now register as a sex offender, and he's been banned from parks, schools and other places where children are expected to gather.
When he touches down in his native OH, protests will be waiting there too, according to local media reports.
"I think 6 months was definitely not enough", Katie Goralski said.
Steelers claim QB Zach Mettenberger off waivers from Chargers
Mettenberger, who was the with the San Diego Chargers prior to being released, was in his first full offseason with the team. It seems that whoever loses the battle for Big Ben's backup will have to battle Bryn Renner for the No. 3 quarterback spot.
Turner's victim, identified as "Emily Doe", made a powerful statement at his sentencing that drew global attention and went viral.
"There was a lot of hate", she added.
The recently turned 21-year-old hurriedly left the Santa Clara County jail in approximately less than 30 seconds wearing a white, long-sleeved shirt with a paper bag containing his belongings and a sports jacket under his arm. He also will be on probation for the next three years.
A harrowing letter from the victim, who remains anonymous, helped draw attention to the case.
"Justice was not served", Molly Hardin said.
Turner's neighbours will receive postcards from the sheriff's office to inform them that a sex offender is living nearby, and his name, address and photo will remain publicly available on the state's online sex offender registry.
Willingham and others called for the recall of Persky because of the six-month jail term he sentenced Brock Turner to for a sexual assault conviction.
Public criticism of the judge who gave light sentence to Turner also continues.
Judge Persky, who had also been a student at Stanford, now faces a recall campaign and has removed himself from hearing criminal cases.
"However, our focus today is on a bill that will require a state prison sentence, not probation, for anyone convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious person".
In the aftermath of Turner's sentencing, the Department of Education released a list of sexual assault complaints at colleges across the country.
