Once the NFL lockout was officially over, the Miami Dolphins were a team actively looking to improve their squad on the offensive side of the football. The quarterback position was their first priority as Chad Henne hasn’t really turned out to be the kind of leader under center that they expected him to be and there were definitely some free agent options around the league at the quarterback position.
Despite having veteran quarterbacks like Vince Young, Matt Hasselback and Tarvaris Jackson available via free agency, the Miami Dolphins failed to make any moves and decided to explore possible trades. The first target that was on their list was Kyle Orton of the Denver Broncos, but even though it appeared that Orton was headed for South Beach, the Dolphins trade attempt fell through.
Fortunately, the Miami Dolphins were able to pull one trade off that should improve their team moving forward as they acquired running back Reggie Bush. With Ricky Williams (Baltimore Ravens) and Ronnie Brown (Philadelphia Eagles) heading elsewhere, there were some open spots in the Dolphins backfield and that also led to the signing of veteran running back Larry Johnson.
During his time with the Kansas City Chiefs, two-time Pro Bowler Larry Johnson was one of the best running backs in the game and was basically the entire offense for the Chiefs. After quite a few off-field incidents and problems the Kansas City Chiefs cut their ties with the troubled running back.
The Cincinnati Bengals and the Washington Redskins were Larry Johnson’s last two teams, but he wasn’t very successful with either team and was ultimately cut by Washington in 2009.
There are no financial details about Larry Johnson’s most recent signing with the Dolphins, but he might have a good chance at getting carries this season sharing the backfield with Reggie Bush and rookie Daniel Thomas.
