Throughout the 2011 Gold Cup, the USA national team has seemed to be confident with no giving it everything they have to advance and win the Gold Cup. That kind of lackluster play has hurt this team as their chances of advancing was put in jeopardy recently when they lost to Panama in the Group Stage.
Fortunately, the Americans were able to bounce back as they beat Guadeloupe, 1-0. Even though they got the win, their play was in serious question yet again as they failed to capitalize on many opportunities. Despite more poor play, the Americans advanced and were matched up with Jamaica.
The Jamaicans were the only team in the tournament that had not conceded a goal and were thought to be the Americans biggest challenge yet. Ironically enough, the complete opposite happened with Jamaica failing contend with the likes of USA and falling, 2-0.
This win was the first impressive victory by the American in the 2011 Gold Cup and perhaps the one thing that will get this team going moving forward. Not only was the American defense solid against the Jamaicans, but the offense of Clint Dempsey and company was second to none as they capitalized on their opportunities and dominated Jamaica.
Now USA will head to the next round to face Panama for the second time in this tournament. Even though Panama played USA as good as anyone has, the Americans seem to be hitting their stride right now and might be ready to give the Panamanians a run for their money.
If the Americans can get the best of the Panamanians on Wednesday, June 22, then USA will advance to the 2011 Gold Cup Final in which they might end up playing rival Mexico. If Mexico can’t advance, USA will play Honduras.
