Arguably the two biggest rivals in soccer on this side of the world is the USA national team going up against the Mexican national team. It is no secret that there is no love lost between USA and Mexico on the pitch in international play, but things are getting really interesting in the 2011 Gold Cup as these two soccer powerhouses could be headed for a collision course in the 2011 Gold Cup Final.
As of right now, USA has just beaten Jamaica (2-0) and Mexico came from behind to beat Guatemala (2-1) in the first round of the knockout stages. Now both teams will have be risking it all yet again in the next round before heading to the 2011 Gold Cup Final.
Before matches got underway in the 2011 Gold Cup, the US national team and the Mexican national team were favored to make it all the way to the final, but these two teams have hit some bumps in the road so far. Mexico has arguably been the better of the two teams up to this point as they haven’t lost or drawn a game yet.
The same can’t be said for USA as they recently lost to Panama in the Group Stage. This was a surprising loss to say the least as Landon Donovan and company were favored to dominate the Panamanians, but that didn’t turn out to be the case and threatened the Americans advancing.
Fortunately, the Americans were still able to advance and now will have a chance to avenge their loss in this tournament by facing Panama for a second time. This game will determine which team will advance to the Gold Cup Final and face either Mexico or Honduras. Even though any two of the four teams left are more than worthy of advancing, everyone will be routing for a USA and Mexico matchup which could be epic!
