Coming into the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the United States and England had a legitimate chances to advance to the second round or what is also known as knockout stage. Not only were the Americans and the English favored to come out of Group C, but the first game of this group game between these two teams was epic and set of the drama of games to follow.
Even though both the United States and England could only draw in their first two games, they were able to get one goal victories on Wednesday. Despite not many people giving Algeria and Slovenia much chance of advancing to the next round out of Group C, both of these teams gave the Americans and English all they could handle in the group stage.
Heading into Wednesday’s matches in South Africa, England and USA could have potentially been knocked out by Slovenia and Algeria as not a single team in Group C had won a game yet and goal differential could have been the deciding factor when it was all said and done.
Fortunately, that wasn’t the case as both USA and England came into Wednesday’s matches on their A game and ready to prove that they were the two teams that deserved to advance in Group C.
A lot of criticism had been directed at both these teams heading into these final games of the group stage, but for different reasons. England failed to live up to expectations as they were thought to be the best team in Group C and the obvious choice to advance. USA on the other hand made it a habit of being down early in matches and always coming from behind.
Even though these matches ended in 1-0 victories, both the American and English squads came up big and showed that they had no intentions of going home early.
Now both of these teams will be waiting to see who they will be playing this weekend in the knockout stage. Get all the latest World Cup odds at the Bookmaker, or read the full Bookmaker Sportsbook Review now.

Slovenia beat Algeria in their first match in group play, so the statement “not a single team in Group C had won a game yet” is incorrect.
