Once the news broke of the Boston Celtics offering combo guard Jason Terry a three-year deal, the attention immediately turned towards veteran Ray Allen. With Allen making no promises or letting anyone know where he might be leaning in terms of signing a free agent contract, the offer given to Terry may be an indication that the Celtics are not waiting for answer from Allen.
With that being said, the two teams to jump out in front as potential favorites to sign Allen are the Los Angeles Clippers and the Miami Heat. It is no secret that Allen wants a chance to win another title before he hangs them up and with the Clippers or Heat he’d have a great chance of doing just that.
Unfortunately for Miami, the Clippers may have the edge in signing the one-time NBA champion as they can offer a starting role at shooting guard. Few teams in the league can offer both a starting role and a chance to compete for a title in the next few years to the soon-to-be 37-year-old guard.
As of right now, the Celtics are trying to bring Allen back with a two-year deal worth $12 million. That amount will almost certainly top any other offer, but may still not be enough to bring him back to Boston.
The Heat on the other hand can only offer about $3 million a year. Not bad for a 37-year-old, but not much compared to the $10 million a year he was making with the Celtics.
Another team potentially in the running to sign veteran is the Memphis Grizzlies. The Grizzlies have offered $5 million over the next two years which is hardly enough to convince him to make the move to Memphis.
