The fallout of the New Orleans Saints controversial bounty program continues. The team had already been hit hard enough with the suspension of head coach Sean Payton and four players for 2012, but now the direction is being turned to the contract negotiations with superstar quarterback Drew Brees.
Reportedly, the Saints and Brees just can’t seem to see eye-to-eye in these negotiations. There’s no question that Brees is still one of the best quarterbacks in football and is coming off arguably the best season of his career after breaking Dan Marino’s passing record, but the team remains adamant about certain conditions in the new contract for their starting quarterback.
Once the team was allowed, the Saints gave Brees the dreaded franchise tag. This tag is basically a way to get out of paying for a long-term deal. With a franchise tag, Brees will have to sign a one-year tender at about 17 million. That’s not a bad payday for one year of service, but Brees and the rest of the league believe the record-breaking quarterback deserves some long-term insurance.
As a result of the franchise tag, Brees has decided not to sign the tender and has skipped all the team’s voluntary workouts. Obviously, missing the ‘voluntary’ workouts isn’t a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, but if a new deal doesn’t get done soon the perennial Pro Bowl will start missing mandatory workouts with the team.
Once Brees begins to start missing these mandatory workouts, things will only get progressively worse for the Saints franchise. As if there won’t be enough attention on the perennial Super Bowl title contenders, the team will be getting even more bad press by not committing to the face of the franchise for the long-term future.
