The Los Angeles Lakers may be the team stealing all the headlines in the City of Angels as of late with the acquisition of Steve Nash and the constant trade speculation surrounding Dwight Howard, but the Los Angeles Clippers are quietly improving their chances of becoming a legitimate NBA title contender with small moves.
It has been rumored for quite some time that the Clippers were targeting Ray Allen in free agency with a need for a shooting guard and three-point threat, but it appears that Allen is no longer in the cards with the most recent moves made by the Clippers.
After signing free agents Jamal Crawford and Chauncey Billups, the Clippers have drastically improved their backcourt with veteran talent that will help Los Angeles contend in the Western Conference next season.
Crawford agreed to sign a four-year deal with the Clippers worth about $21.7 million. Billups resisted the temptation to play for the defending NBA champion Miami Heat and will be signing a one-year deal worth $4.3 million if he can make good on bonus incentives.
There was some speculation about the health of Billups after suffering the season-ending Achilles injury. Apparently, the injury doesn’t seem to be an issue for the Clippers as they were willing to take the risk with the veteran point guard who may not see the court until Dec.
These two additions along with the trade to acquire Lamar Odom were giant leaps in the right direction as the Clippers will be a scary sight for any opposing team next season.
The main focus of the Clippers’ front office moving forward is extending the contracts of superstars Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. The acquisition of Crawford and Billups will definitely help the team’s case in trying to lockup the perennial All-Star long-term.
