After being unable to sign a lucrative long-term deal with another team in the NBA, shooting guard O.J. Mayo decided to ink a deal with the Dallas Mavericks.
Reportedly, Mayo has agreed to sign a multi-year deal with the Mavs. The details of the deal, in terms of money, have yet to be released by Dallas.
After being unable make a trade for Dwight Howard or sign perennial All-Star point guard Deron Williams, the Mavs were considered the one potential NBA title contender that failed miserably in the off-season. Despite that being the case with big-name players in their prime, the Mavs have done a good job of bouncing back as of late.
The first move the Mavs made to bring in new talent was acquiring point guard Darren Collison. This was a great move by the team as Collison may turn out to be a solid starting in the backcourt. Almost immediately after landing Collison, the Mavs were able to acquire former All-Star center Chris Kaman.
With those two moves alone, the team became that much more talented and a legitimate playoff team moving forward. Shortly after landing Kaman, the Mavs also brought in some more veteran talent with the acquisition of forward Elton Brand through the amnesty auction.
Along with addressing the frontcourt with the acquisitions of Brand and Kaman, the Mavs have done an even better job of making the backcourt younger, faster and more promising moving forward with Collison and Mayo.
After coming off the bench with the Memphis Grizzlies over the past few years, Mayo will be the starting shooting guard for the Mavs. The starting role in Dallas might be just what this kid needs to become one of the best players at his position in the NBA.
