The NFL regular season is officially underway and it got started with a bang when the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers took on the New Orleans Saints at Lambeau Field on Thursday night. Not only are these two NFC Conference heavyweights coming into this season with high hopes of contending for a Super Bowl title, but both teams know that this matchup could be a potential NFC Championship preview.
Right out of the gate the defending champs looked just as sharp as they did when they beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl February. Aaron Rodgers had the Packers offense firing on all cylinders as the perennial Pro Bowler threw three touchdowns in the first quarter to give the Green Bay Packers a commanding lead, but Drew Brees and company were not backing down as they were able to get one touchdown in the first quarter with a pass from Brees to wide receiver Robert Meachem.
After a red-hot first quarter, the Green Bay Packers slowed down a bit on both sides of the football as they gave up a field goal and a punt return touchdown to the lightening quick Darren Sproles (72 yards) in the second quarter. The Packers did strike back before the half with a 17-yard run by James Stark to make the score 28-17.
In the second half, the New Orleans Saints really started to step up their game as they were able to close the gap to just eight points (35-27) going into the fourth quarter after another field goal by John Kasay (30 yards) and a touchdown pass from Drew Brees to Devery Henderson (29-yard pass). The Packers were able to get on the board as well in the third quarter with an amazing kickoff return touchdown by Randall Cobb who went an NFL record 108 yards for the score.
Despite the Saints rallying from behind throughout the entire second half, the Packers were able come out on top by stopping New Orleans on the goal line with time expiring in the fourth quarter, 42-34.
If this is a sign of things to come in the NFL regular season, every football fan around the corner is in for treat!
