The Carolina Panthers were arguably the worst team in the NFL last year and in desperate need of some drastic changes moving forward. Even though they had drafted what they thought was the future face of the franchise in quarterback Jimmy Clausen out of Notre Dame, the once promising young quarterback turned out to be a bust in his first season and forced the hand of the Carolina Panthers in the most recent draft to take quarterback Cam Newton with the first overall pick.
Personally, I thought it was an unwise move to draft Newton since they had drafted quarterback just one year earlier and haven’t really given Clausen time to get use to the NFL level. One season with a horrible team isn’t enough to turn the franchise around and an unfair assessment of Clausen’s talent, but I guess the temptation was too great not to take Newton who is the new hybrid of quarterback in the NFL today.
Now that Cam Newton is the future face of the franchise, the focus shifts to the current players on the roster and what moves this team will make moving forward. Even though Newton is more of a quarterback that gets the job done on the ground, the number one overall pick has been lobbying for his new star wide receiver Steve Smith to remain with the Carolina Panthers.
After the disaster of a season they had last year, the Panthers’ star wideout Steve Smith was considered to be on his way out of Carolina. Even though Smith hasn’t exactly been a top receiver in the game over the past two years, the veteran wide receiver will have great value for a lot of teams around the league.
With that being said, Smith could be in high demand before next season, but Newton hopes he will return to become his number one target in the Panthers’ offense.
