Last week the Carolina Panthers saw their rookie quarterback Cam Newton exceed expectations as their starter under center after the number one overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft threw for 422 yards and scored three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing). This performance was absolutely amazing as most people believed that Cam Newton would seriously struggle on the NFL level and might be headed to the bench in favor of Jimmy Clausen as a result.
Fortunately, that hasn’t turned out to be the case as Newton had a record-breaking performance and gave the Panthers hope for the future. In Week 2, the consensus around the league was that Newton would get a serious reality check as the Carolina Panthers were hosting the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers.
The Packers defense wasn’t as good as expected in Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints in the NFL season opener, but the Saints offense is amongst the league’s elite and can score consistently on any defense in the league as they proved that against the Chicago Bears in Week 2. With that being said, the Packers were favored to destroy Cam Newton and company, but that didn’t turn out to be the case as the rookie gunslinger had another performance for the NFL record books.
With 485 total yards and two touchdowns, Cam Newton has shown that he is on his way to being the next superstar quarterback in the NFL and could have a bright future on the horizon as the Carolina Panthers starting quarterback. Newton did throw three interceptions in Week 2 against the Packers, but his overall performance was so impressive that those picks weren’t even considered to be all that bad.
Perhaps the most impressive part of Newton’s performance in Week 2 was that he single-handedly kept the Panthers in the game and on the verge of pulling off the massive upset against the defending champs.
Needless to say, this kid looks like he is the player to watch this season as these great performances might be a sign of things to come for the former Heisman trophy winner in the NFL.
