Panthers’ Cam Newton sets rookie record in NFL debut

Coming into the NFL regular season opener against the Arizona Cardinals, all eyes were on rookie quarterback Cam Newton as everyone wanted to see whether or not the former Heisman trophy winner and BCS champion could transcend his game on the NFL level. Not many people, including myself, expected much out of this kid in his NFL debut against an improved Cardinals squad, but he definitely turned some heads on Sunday by putting up some record numbers that will probably stand the test of time.

Everyone knew that Cam Newton was a versatile quarterback with the ability to hurt opposing defenses with his legs, but no one knew just how good of a passer he was until he threw for an eye-popping 422 yards and two touchdowns against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1.

The 422 yards that Newton threw was an NFL record for a rookie, but despite his impressive debut as the Carolina Panthers starting quarterback, the Arizona Cardinals came out on top. There was no question that the Cardinals were the favorites coming into this Week 1 showdown with the Panthers, but there is no way that expected to get such a challenge out of a rookie quarterback in his first game as a pro.

Cam Newton did throw an interception and gave up a fumble against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, but he was pretty much on the money all night long throwing the football and getting it down on the ground as well with 18 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown. The one thing that probably got a lot of Panthers fans excited about this game was the chemistry between Newton and wide receiver Steve Smith.

Over the past few years, Smith hasn’t been the receiver he used to be, but giving him the benefit of the doubt he didn’t really have a solid quarterback until now. Smith finished Week 1 with a league-high 178 yards and two touchdowns and might be back to his old ways as one of the best wideouts in the game.
