The Peyton Manning saga continues to take turns for the worst after it was reported that the four-time NFL MVP quarterback had no three but four neck surgeries last year. This is some pretty convenient timing for the Indianapolis Colts with owner Jim Irsay officially opening the door for Manning and saying it is his call to return to Indianapolis, but contract restructuring will have to be made in order for him to stay with the Colts.
The writing is definitely on the wall in Indianapolis right now with the Irsay letting Manning know that this will eventually be rookie quarterback Andrew Luck’s team in the near future, but that hasn’t seemed to have convinced the future Hall of Famer to go elsewhere just yet. The deadline for a definitive move by the Colts is March 8 when they will owe Manning a roster bonus of $28 million.
Colts owner Jim Irsay may be saying that he is willing to bring Peyton Manning back to Indianapolis to basically play out the rest of his career, but the news of this undisclosed surgery and the uncertainty surrounding Manning’s future might be enough to officially part ways. Even if Manning does end up staying with the Colts, there is a good chance that if Peyton can’t play to start the season he may never get back under center for Indianapolis if rookie Andrew Luck plays well.
Needless to say, the future of Peyton Manning in an Indianapolis Colts uniform is not looking good moving forward. The choice may be his from here on out, but an ultimatum might be given to the superstar quarterback and that might very well force him out of town and onto another team’s roster at the start of the 2012-13 NFL season.
