In a prepared statement that explained the NCAA decision that the Board of Governors handed down, it said that NCAA events and championships must be able to promote full inclusive for every college athlete, coach, administrator and fan.

NCAA President Mark Emmert says it's up to the Atlantic Coast Conference and its members whether to follow the association's lead and pull events out of North Carolina because of a state law that some say can lead to discrimination against LGBT people.

The championship games that will be relocated out of North Carolina include men's basketball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's tennis, women's golf, women's lacrosse, and men's baseball.

The only championship events that can be hosted in North Carolina this academic year are ones determined when a team earns the right to play on its own campus.

McCorkle said the removal of men's basketball tournament games from Greensboro hits hard because college basketball is the "civil religion" in the state that's home to UNC, Duke, N.C. State and Wake Forest. I genuinely look forward to the NCAA merging all men's and women's teams together as singular unisex teams. The president of the University of North Carolina condemned the move.

"The NCAA would bode well to stop their political peacocking and care more about the safety and privacy of athletes across the nation, far more than their profit line", she told CNN-affiliate WNCN.

There's a chance North Carolina might not be left out of hosting opportunities after the 2016-17 school year because decisions on championship site assignments that normally would have been announced in December have been delayed until 2017, Emmert said. The NCAA has also said that future events would likely not be coming to the state with the current status quo.

The law prevents cities and counties from passing protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity. This summer, the National Basketball Association chose to relocate the 2017 All Star Game from Charlotte to New Orleans because of the law.

Athletic directors at three of the state's ACC schools - North Carolina's Bubba Cunningham, North Carolina State's Debbie Yow and Wake Forest's Ron Wellman - issued statements saying they were disappointed at the loss of events.

The measure has been a focal point in the debate over transgender rights in the United States, sparking legal battles and boycotts by companies, musical performers and other states that have barred public employees from traveling to North Carolina on official business.

New locations for the championship events are expected soon.
