One of things that the NBA lacks these days is dominant big men as the days of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, David Robinson and that Shaquille O’Neal in his prime are officially over. Even though there are some promising big man prospects in the game today like Andrew Bynum of the two-time defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers and Kendrick Perkins of the Oklahoma City Thunder, there is only one player in the league today that actually embodies the kind of dominance of the old-school big man.
Even though this kid wasn’t exactly dominant out the gate after being selected number one overall by the Orlando Magic, these days he is without a doubt the best all-around center in the game as Dwight Howard has no equal in the NBA.
With the ability to run the floor like a guard and the physique of a God, Dwight Howard is an absolute beast on the basketball floor and can dominate both offensively and on the glass, but his best attribute is on the defensive side of the floor as he is without a doubt the best player on defense in the NBA today.
Other Defensive Player of the Year award candidates:
Tyson Chandler, Dallas Mavericks
Throughout his entire NBA career Tyson Chandler has been one of those players that was thought to be incredibly talented and quite possibly one of the next great players at his position, but he never really turned into that dominant center everyone thought he would be coming out of high school.
Despite that being the fact, Chandler is still a very good defensive player and in the running for Defensive Player of the Year this season.
Kevin Garnett, Boston Celtics
Even though it is become pretty obvious these days that Kevin Garnett is not the player he used to be as age has started to take its toll on the big man, no one in the league besides maybe Kobe Bryant chose the kind of passion for the game that KG does. Not only is KG the heart and soul of the Boston Celtics these days, but he is also the best defensive player they have in the paint.
