Friday, Seattle Mariners’ Erik Bedard is scheduled for surgery on his shoulder in Seattle. Dr. Lewis Yocum, the well-known orthopedist for the Angels, will assist Dr. Edward Khalfayan, the team’s main physician, for the surgery. This will be the second surgery that Bedard will undergo in the past year.
This surgery is just one of the many surgeries that he has had since being traded from Baltimore just shortly before the 2008 season to Seattle. The left-handed pitcher has not thrown a single pitch this season since he has been recovering from his surgery that was performed last year on his shoulder – more specifically, it was labrum surgery.
It was just last month that Bedard was actually supposed to make his debut for this season after a successful rehab stint in the Minor Leagues; however, he began experiencing some more pain in his shoulder, which ultimately kept him from making his debut this year.
He will instead undergo this surgery as it has been deemed appropriate after being examined by Dr. Khalfayan, Dr. Yocum, as well as another doctor, Dr. David Altchek. The three doctors decided together that it was apparent that Bedard needed to undergo another surgery on his shoulder in hopes of correcting the issue for good.
I hope that this surgery will allow Bedard to see some positive results rather than missing an entire season again. Due to his previous injuries since his trade from Baltimore to Seattle, the LHP has been limited to 15 starts due to injuries in his first two seasons with the Mariners. Let’s hope that this surgery is more successful and he’ll be on the field pitching and playing productively this time next year or sooner.
