Ian Snell, pitcher for the Seattle Mariners, has now been selected for assignment. To take his place, the Mariners recalled right-handed Brian Sweeney from AAA Tacoma. Sweeney signed as a free agent for the Minor Leagues just two months on April 16.
Prior to being designated for assignment, Snell went 0-5 and had a 6.41 ERA. And for the second time this year, Snell was sent to the bullpen on Monday with Luke French taking over his spot in the rotation. His career record is 38-52 with an ERA of 4.80.
Snell has given up nine runs in eleven innings during four of his relief appearances. The team tried to make Snell work but there just wasn’t a spot for him on the team where he was efficient enough to remain active on the roster and to continue playing and sporting a Mariners jersey. He was proving to be of no use to the team.
It was last July when Snell originally joined the Mariners at the same time that SS Jack Wilson was acquired - all part of a 7 player deal. Although his time is up in Seattle, he is likely to find a chance to further his career with another team.
As for recalled Sweeney, in 28 2/3 innings, he was 2-1 with an ERA of 2.51 where he allowed eight walks and 32 strikeouts. In his 49 career games, including two starts, Sweeney is 3-0 with an ERA of 3.49.
For the prior three consecutive seasons, 36-year-old Sweeney has had the joy of playing for the Nippon Ham-Fighters in Japan. In April, he signed for the Minor Leagues. He hasn’t been on the field for the Major Leagues since 2006 when he played with the San Diego Padres.
Sweeney will not return to the Mariners with the team that he made his debut in the Major Leagues with back in 2003.
