Last week, we reported that Ryan Madson, reliever for the Philadelphia Phillies, was put on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of a broken big toe. This time on the DL would allow him time for a full recovery from the toe injury. He gained the injury by kicking a chair last week after being disgusted with himself for blowing a save in the game against San Francisco. This was his second blown save of the season so he was unhappy with himself.
A CT scan revealed earlier today that Madson’s broken toe was bad enough that he will need to undergo surgery due to further damage to the injury over the course of the weekend (multiple breaks). After the CT scan, Madson met with a foot specialist, Mr. Raikin, confirmed that the surgery was needed and will be performing the surgery. His big toe on his right foot will receive surgery on Tuesday at Rothman Institute.
Big toe injuries seem like they probably wouldn’t take much time to heal; however, it does take time to fully recover from a broken big toe. It could very well be several months before he is able to be back on the field playing again. We won’t know anything of what to expect in regards to his return until after his surgery on Tuesday.
The replacement for Madson after his toe injury last week was Brad Lidge, who Madson had filled in for this season due to his absence from playing. Madson was a great closer, so let’s hope, and the Phillies should hope that Lidge will be as great of a closer as Madson was for the team; otherwise, there could be trouble in the wind for the Philadelphia Phillies in upcoming games unless they look for help elsewhere.
