Wednesday began the Seattle Mariners opener for the series against the Toronto Blue Jays but before the game commenced, the Mariners activated Milton Bradley from the restricted list for the MLB. On the lineup, outfielder Bradley was expected to bat in sixth position and find himself in left field.
32-year-old Milton Bradley has been away from the team for a couple weeks now seeking professional help with some personal issues. He has not been out on the field playing since the beginning of May when he voluntarily left the game claiming that he seriously needed some help with some personal emotional stress.
He was first acquired by the Mariners in December, prior to the 2009 MLB season, from the Chicago Cubs and exchanged Carlos Silva (pitcher) for Bradley. He signed a three-year contract worth $30 million, which he is currently in his second year of.
In order to create room on the roster for outfielder Bradley, the Seattle Mariners optioned 29-year-old Sean White to AAA Tacoma, who has participated in a total of 15 relief games. Bradley, prior to his leave from the team, he appeared in 21 games. He had 12 RBI, two homes runs with a batting average of .214. He has been at bat 70 times and has had 24 strikeouts.
Bradley’s personal stress situation is not something that will be cured overnight. Although he has returned to playing with the Mariners and appears on the roster and in the lineup for tonight’s game (and many others, I’m sure), he is still going to need professional help to get to where he needs to be. Hopefully, he can focus on baseball while recovering from his emotional and personal issues. Being back in the game may actually help him a little bit.
