It could be debated at this point in time that the Oakland Raiders are the biggest losers in NFL free agency this year. Not only did they lose arguably their best player in Nnamdi Asomugha (Philadelphia Eagles), but they also lost arguably their best offensive weapon next to running back Darren McFadden in tight end Zach Miller (Seattle Seahawks).
Once Zach Miller signed with the Seattle Seahawks, the consensus around the league was that the Oakland Raiders had dropped the ball once again. Now that their best receiver has gone elsewhere due to lack of activity from the Raiders, Oakland were forced into a corner and needed to make a move for a tight end as soon as possible.
Fortunately, the Oakland Raiders had a great option in a free agent tight end in the New York Giants’ Kevin Boss. Many people believed that the Giants would re-sign Boss, but the Raiders got the jump on the boys in blue in the Big Apple as they were able to lock up the tight end.
Reportedly, the Oakland Raiders have agreed to sign Kevin Boss to a four-year deal worth $16 million dollars. This was somewhat of a steal for the Raiders and might work out in their favor since Zach Miller was looking for a much more lucrative deal. With Miller signing for $34 million with the Seahawks, the Raiders may have saved close to $18 million going with Boss instead of Miller.
This is definitely a step in the right direction for the Oakland Raiders, but I believe they still need to get a serious upgrade in their receiving corps. With no real go-to guy downfield, the Raiders will continue to struggle in the passing game, but they might be able to change that if they can land a free agent wideout like Malcom Floyd.
