San Francisco 49ers @ San Diego Chargers Thurs. Sept. 1, 2011 10 p.m. EST
The San Francisco 49ers are one of the most talented young teams in the NFL today with a potentially bright future ahead with new head coach Jim Harbaugh calling the shots on the sidelines. With promising young players like running back Frank Gore, tight end Vernon Davis and wide receivers Michael Crabtree and Braylon Edwards, the 49ers passing game and their quarterbacks have the targets they need to make the next step this season with a potent offense at their disposal.
The only problem the San Francisco 49ers and their new head coach face right now is which quarterback deserves to be under center for Week 1. The reports out of the Bay Area over the last couple of weeks have shown Alex Smith as the frontrunner to retain his job as starting quarterback for the 49ers, but rookie gunslinger Colin Kaepernick out of Nevada continues to put pressure on the veteran quarterback and show Jim Harbaugh that he is worthy of being number one on the depth chart.
It remains to be seen whether or not Harbaugh will start a rookie quarterback or stick with his veteran, but that will be what makes this final preseason game against the San Diego Chargers all the more interesting.
Last week against the Houston Texans, the San Francisco 49ers offense was worthless to say the least. The 49ers ended up getting out worked on both sides of the football and getting some lousy play out of both of their quarterbacks with Kaepernick throwing for 52 yards on six of 16 passing and Smith doing eve worse with just two completions on six attempts. Both Smith and Kaepernick threw interceptions and no touchdowns.
The only score for the 49ers against the Texans came off an interception return by Ahmad Brooks. This week the competition only gets better as the San Francisco 49ers will travel down south to San Diego to take on Philip Rivers and the Chargers.
