Philadelphia Eagles at Pittsburgh Steelers Thurs. Aug. 18, 2011 8 p.m. EST
The second week of the NFL preseason will get underway this Thursday night with the New England Patriots taking on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and then the Philadelphia Eagles facing off against the defending AFC Conference champion Pittsburgh Steelers.
Two-time NFL MVP quarterback Tom Brady (if he plays) and company going head-to-head against the up-and-coming Bucs will be an intriguing matchup between a savvy veteran squad and one of the league’s most promising teams, but the showdown between two of the NFL’s best defenses could be the highlight of Thursday night.
There is no question at this point in time that the Philadelphia Eagles are the most talented team on both sides of the football heading into the upcoming NFL regular season. With all the Pro Bowler additions to this team, the Eagles will be extremely tough to beat; on paper at least.
With that being said, the Eagles will be under tremendous pressure this season to succeed and their first real test in the preseason will be against Steelers and their lockdown defense led by James Harrison. If Philly can prove that they can continue to play at a high level against a team like Pittsburgh, the Eagles will be a force to be reckoned with this season and beyond.
The Eagles will definitely be aiming for the Super Bowl this season, but they won’t be able to contend with the best of the best this season if they can’t compete with a dominant defense like the Steelers. It may just be preseason, but the Eagles will have to prove to they can live up to the hype in the first few series of this showdown against the Steelers on Thursday night at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.
