Seattle Mariners’ Erik Bedard to Undergo Surgery on Shoulder

Friday, Seattle Mariners’ Erik Bedard is scheduled for surgery on his shoulder in Seattle. Dr. Lewis Yocum, the well-known orthopedist for the Angels, will assist Dr. Edward Khalfayan, the team’s main physician, for the surgery. This will be the second surgery that Bedard will undergo in the past year.

This surgery is just one of the many surgeries that he has had since being traded from Baltimore just shortly before the 2008 season to Seattle. The left-handed pitcher has not thrown a single pitch this season since he has been recovering from his surgery that was performed last year on his shoulder – more specifically, it was labrum surgery. Kinsler to DL; Rangers Recall Moreland

The Texas Rangers and the Oakland Athletics go head-to-head today in Arlington but the Rangers will be without second baseman Ian Kinsler who landed on the 15-day disabled list with a left groin strain on Thursday. The move is retroactive to Wednesday and came just a day after Kinsler sat out Wednesday’s game against the A’s, which the Rangers lost 3-1.

Kinsler is batting a .298 average with 6 homeruns and 38 runs batted in. He started off the season on the disabled list due to a high ankle sprain, which resulted in Kinsler missing out on the first 22 regular season games this year. As for Kinsler’s current injury, it hasn’t proven to be series; however, the Rangers want him in proper shape and be ready and able to give 100% for the postseason. Continue Reading…

Celebration Sends Marlins’ Coghlan to DL

The Florida Marlins lose their starting left fielder due to a celebration after the team’s 5-4 win over the Atlanta Braves Sunday afternoon, which lasted 11 innings. Following a walk-off win by Wes Helms, Chris Coghlan went to deliver a celebration to Helms with a pie in the face and was injured in the process. He said that he jumped to shove the pie in Helms face and landed on his knee wrong.

Coghlan was placed on the disabled list Monday after an MRI showed that the left fielder had a torn meniscus in his left knee. The team is waiting a couple days to determine whether or not his knee needs surgery, but if it does, the lead-off batter will likely be out anywhere from six to eight weeks for full recovery. If the surgery is not required then he’ll be out about two to three weeks. Continue Reading…

Haren Acquired by Angels Sunday; Debut Monday

As deadline week nears, the first trade came this past Sunday afternoon when the Los Angeles Angels acquired Dan Haren for 29-year-old Joe Saunders from the Arizona Diamondbacks as well as three other baseball players – 21-year-old Patrick Corbin, 25-year-old Rafael Rodriguez with the third player being revealed at a later date, whom many believe may very well be pitcher Tyler Skaggs.

Haren has started 21 games this year and is currently 7-8 with a 4.60 earned run average. He was one of the top prospects for the non-waiver trade July 31 deadline. In the past five seasons, Haren has been with Arizona as well as Oakland, and has successfully pitched over 200 innings and claimed a victory in a minimum of 14 games leaving him at 16-8 with an earned run average of 3.33. More than that, he’s a an All-Star of three times. Continue Reading…

A-Rod Hit by Pitch Causing 600th Home Run to be Put on Hold

Alex Rodriguez is working on making his 600th career home run and was initially hoping to put an end to that quest while playing at the Yankees home field. Rodriguez has been trying for this 600th home run milestone since July 22. However, that quest was put on hold after being hit by a pitch on his left hand and forearm – just barely missing his face after it ricocheted off his forearm and probably would have had Rodriguez not turned away from the plate. The 95-mph fastball pitch was thrown by rookie pitcher Blake Wood of the Kansas City Royals during the bottom of Sunday’s eight inning.

Rodriguez was able to finish the game against Kansas City Sunday at his home field, which was a victory for the Yankees 12-6. The win also leaves the New York Yankees with baseball’s best record at 62-35. The Yankees are currently ahead Tampa Bay just three games in the American League East. Continue Reading…

In an effort to strengthen their team’s offense Thursday, the Angels made a move that leaded to the gain from the Royals of Alberto Callaspo in exchange for two pitchers: left-hander Will Smith and right-hander Sean O’Sullivan.

The upcoming start of a four game series against the Rangers, who are the front-runners in the American League West division, the three-time champion of the AL West division needed to step up their game in hopes of regaining that title this year.

Callaspo is a 27-year-old switch-hitter that hit his career high in the 2009 season when he had 11 home runs and 73 runs batted in when batting a .300. This season with the Royals, Callaspo is currently hitting a .275 with 8 home runs and 43 runs batted in. Continue Reading…

This past MLB off-season, the Baltimore Orioles signed closer Mike Gonzalez to a $12 million, two-year deal. He isn’t a stranger to receiving “boos” especially when he blew two saves during three outings. Right now, though, his main focus is being the most effective closer that he can possibly be for his entire team now that he has been activated from the 60-day disabled list. Official announcement for this move was made prior to the O’s game Wednesday against Tampa Bay. Continue Reading…

Tuesday night, negotiations between Kyle Parker and the Colorado Rockies seemed to have failed. It now appears that Parker will be returning to Clemson as the starting quarterback for 2010.

Last season, as a freshman at Clemson, Park successfully threw 20 touchdowns and was a first round draft pick in the 2010 MLB draft in June. He had apparently been discussing serious deals with the Colorado Rockies in order to join the team. Had he signed with the Rockies, he would have signed as an outfielder and it would have been a baseball only contract. Continue Reading…

Padres Placed Latos, Adams to DL

Two pitchers of the San Diego Padres have been placed on the 14-day disabled list Friday. Both Mat Latos (pictured) and Mike Adams will not be participating in the upcoming games.

Latos won’t see any field action until he recovers from a left strained oblique muscle that he suffered when he – wait for it – tried to keep from sneezing! Yes, it’s apparently true that you can strain your oblique muscle by doing this. Latos isn’t the first as Sammy Sosa encountered the same experience years ago. This injury occurred this a week ago in Colorado. He is retroactive for two and a half weeks until July 9. In his 17 starts this MLB season, the right-handed pitcher has a 2.45 ERA and is currently 10-4. Continue Reading…

Fresh from their league’s first All-Star game victory in 14 years, teams across the national league are energized to take the home field advantage in the World Series. But first, they have to get there. Across the league, no second place team is further than four games off the pace, which should make for a fight to the finish from west to east.

Everyone’s wondering: Just how have the San Diego Padres done it? How have they taken what looks on paper to be a mediocre lineup and put themselves ahead of the pack in the NL West? The answer is pitching, pitching and more pitching. Leaders in ERA, opponent’s batting average and runs allowed, the San Diego hurlers have been stingy up to this point, and their mastery is going to need to continue, because they’ve got three teams breathing down their neck. Continue Reading…
