Three weeks ago, the Philadelphia Phillies lost their first baseman Ryan Howard to the disabled list. He was sliding into second base on August 1 at Washington and sustained a left ankle sprain. He is now back and ready to play.

The Phillies activated All-Star Howard from the 15-day DL just before Saturday’s game against the Washington Nationals. He played Friday night for a rehab stint at which time he has a single walk, a single RBI and went 1-for-2. Apart from his rehab game Friday, he is currently batting an average of .292 with 23 home runs, 81 runs batted in, as well as 17 doubles in his 104 appearances this 2010 MLB season. Boston Red Sox has been having one thing after another and they just keep getting hit with bad news. It’s been determined that Jacoby Ellsbury (pictured) has a fractured rib and he is likely out for the rest of this 2010 MLB season. While I say it’s bad news for the Red Sox, Ellsbury hasn’t exactly been on top of his game this season anyhow so it may not be such a loss cause. Earlier this year, he collided with a teammate (Beltre), fractured five ribs at the time, and is now suffering from a fractured rib again. Bryce Harper reported Tuesday morning that he had successfully inked a deal with the Washington Nationals for almost $10 million on Monday night. The number one overall draft pick out of this year’s 2010 MLB Draft just barely made the midnight deadline on Monday of being signed. Had this midnight deadline not been reached, Harper would have been dismissed and would be eligible to enter into next year’s MLB Draft. Therefore, lucky for the Nationals, they were able to agree on a deal and will have Harper as one of their own.

Harper’s deal is worth just shy of $10 million and is a five-year deal with Washington. Harper was one of the 14 draft picks that waited until the last minute to reach deals with their teams to sign into the MLB. Continue Reading…

An MRI determined that Chipper Jones had indeed torn his ACL in his left knee and it would require surgery. The Atlanta Braves icon underwent surgery Saturday morning, which was a success.

Chipper will not return this 2010 MLB season but he has decided that he will not retire after this year. In fact, Jones will attempt a comeback for the 2011 MLB season; therefore, when spring training camp rolls around next year, we will see Jones with the Braves. Continue Reading…

Last night, during his appearance against the Texas Rangers, Jacoby Ellsbury is headed to Boston this Saturday morning to have yet again another MRI. He is said to be having his ribs re-examined in the fact that he possibly reinjured himself last night during a collision that took place at first base in Arlington.

Ellsbury collided with pitcher Tommy Hunter, but that wasn’t the worst of it. It was what happened after the collision that is taking Ellsbury MLB season one step closer to ending or at least plummeting drastically. Chipper Jones got a hit to the heart this Thursday when he found out that he’ll miss the rest of this MLB season. Although he was planning to retire after this season, it is safe to say that he is more than disappointed that he’ll have to miss due to an injury that he sustained to his left knee, specifically he has a torn ACL. The torn ligament was determined on Thursday when he underwent an MRI exam to determine the extent of the injury and it definitely wasn’t good news for anyone.

The good news not only blasted Jones and his family but also the Braves. Jones has been improving a lot over the past couple months and was a huge force of wind in the lineup for Atlanta, who the 18-year veteran has played with for a total of 17 career seasons and manager Bobby Cox. It’s been a rough 2010 for the Boston Red Sox. The injuries started in April with the sidelining of Jacoby Ellsbury and never let up. The latest casualty is team homerun and slugging leader Kevin Youkilis, who is done for the season after having thumb surgery. However, there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel as Dustin Pedroia battles back from a broken right foot.

He suffered the injury back on June 25 and has been pushing to get back in the lineup ever since. At one point, he had to be brought in slowly by the Red Sox training staff because his ambitious workout schedule ran the risk of aggravating the injury. Continue Reading…

Saturday, Alex Cora (pictured) was released by the New York Mets and the Mets also optioned outfielder Jesus Feliciano to AAA Buffalo. In his 62 games with New York, 34-year-old Cora was hitting an average of .207. Had he made it for 80 games total with the New York Mets, he would have had a contract worth $2 million for 2011.

As for Feliciano, he had a batting average of .292 with four doubles, a single triple and two runs batted in during his 27 appearances with the Mets. He is in pursuit of an International League Batting Championship. He returns to AAA Buffalo from his second stint with the New York Mets. Continue Reading…

Jose Guillen is being designated for assignment by the Kansas City Royals. Guillen was in his final year of his three-year contract of $36 million. When he signed with the Royals three years ago, the $36 million contract made the outfielder the highest paid player ever per year. By doing this, the Royals are saving about $4 million this season.

The Royals initially signed Guillen as a free agent after the 2007 season in hopes of strengthening their batting, which they were able to do successfully. Signing with the Royals made Kansas City his ninth Major League club that Guillen has played with. Guillen started his MLB career when he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1997. Wednesday, a release was issued by the St. Louis Cardinals in regards to having to place right-hander Jason Motte on the 15-day disabled list specifically due to an injury that Motte sustained to his right shoulder. More specifically, the injury was referred to as an AC sprain.

The 28-year-old first felt something wrong in his shoulder Monday night at which time he reported the discomfort to the team’s training staff but did not express his pain to the coaching staff. The right-handed pitcher pitched the seventh inning and then the eight, but only after receiving heat on his right shoulder to help relieve the discomfort that he was feeling. However, the pain showed during the eight inning as he didn’t pitch nearly as well as he did previously. Continue Reading…
