Alex Rodriguez is working on making his 600th career home run and was initially hoping to put an end to that quest while playing at the Yankees home field. Rodriguez has been trying for this 600th home run milestone since July 22. However, that quest was put on hold after being hit by a pitch on his left hand and forearm – just barely missing his face after it ricocheted off his forearm and probably would have had Rodriguez not turned away from the plate. The 95-mph fastball pitch was thrown by rookie pitcher Blake Wood of the Kansas City Royals during the bottom of Sunday’s eight inning.
Rodriguez was able to finish the game against Kansas City Sunday at his home field, which was a victory for the Yankees 12-6. The win also leaves the New York Yankees with baseball’s best record at 62-35. The Yankees are currently ahead Tampa Bay just three games in the American League East.
A-Rod is ultimately hoping to become the youngest player to reach 600 homers. He will also be the seventh player to do so. Rodriguez turns 35 this Tuesday and while he would like to reach the milestone prior to his birthday, it may just not happen.
Whether or not he’ll be up to par to return to playing Monday is yet to be determined. The Yankees will find themselves in Cleveland for a series of four games and A-Rod sure hopes to feel like going after his 600th home run and hopefully achieving that milestone in Cleveland, where he will be up against the same starter, Kyle Parker, who he scored his 500th home run off of back in August of 2007.
According to media reports and the statements of A-Rod as well as manager Joe Girardi, he’ll probably be playing Monday night in Cleveland.
