Tuesday night, negotiations between Kyle Parker and the Colorado Rockies seemed to have failed. It now appears that Parker will be returning to Clemson as the starting quarterback for 2010.
Last season, as a freshman at Clemson, Park successfully threw 20 touchdowns and was a first round draft pick in the 2010 MLB draft in June. He had apparently been discussing serious deals with the Colorado Rockies in order to join the team. Had he signed with the Rockies, he would have signed as an outfielder and it would have been a baseball only contract.
What is it that the Rockies couldn’t agree on to make Parker sign with them? Supposedly, Parker is asking for a signing bonus of $3 million. I’m assuming that if they don’t reach an agreement with Parker for this signing bonus then Parker will return to Clemson and not look back once. The reason he is asking for this is reportedly because he would be committing to baseball exclusively.
Although we are speaking as if there is no possible way for Parker to sign with Colorado, it is still possible because Parker has the right to change his mind if he pleases. Originally, Tuesday was a deadline that he set for a deal to be reached but he has until August 15 to make a deal officially.
Parker made an official announcement Wednesday that he had completely ruled out the option of playing with the Rockies exclusively. What does that mean? Pretty much, the possibility is that he’ll play baseball during the summer and football during the fall. He plans to continue negotiating with Colorado to see if something can be arranged to meet both of their needs but untl then his plan is to play football this fall at Clemson.
As for the Clemson Tigers, they are ecstatic that KP will be playing with them this fall.
