Boston Red Sox has been having one thing after another and they just keep getting hit with bad news. It’s been determined that Jacoby Ellsbury (pictured) has a fractured rib and he is likely out for the rest of this 2010 MLB season. While I say it’s bad news for the Red Sox, Ellsbury hasn’t exactly been on top of his game this season anyhow so it may not be such a loss cause. Earlier this year, he collided with a teammate (Beltre), fractured five ribs at the time, and is now suffering from a fractured rib again. He can’t catch a break this year – very disappointing since he led the Major League with a total of 70 stolen bases in the 2009 MLB season.
The Washington Nationals can’t seem to get away from the injuries this year – especially within the past month or so. Outfielder Josh Willingham has been fighting a sore knee since April but has increasingly worsened in the past month and is now facing surgery, which will be performed early next week, in hopes of being 100% healthy for spring training next year. In other words, he’s done for the season. In the first half of this season, Willingham hit a .281 average with 15 home runs and 46 runs batted in and since his All-Star appearance, he has hit a .225 average with a single home run.
Willingham has officially been placed on the 15-day disabled list as of Thursday with outfielder Nyjer Morgan being activated as his replacement, who was previously on the 15-day disabled list due to soreness in his right hip. He’ll play center field Thursday night in the Nationals’ games against the Atlanta Braves and will also be the leadoff batter. This season, his stats look pretty good – batting a .261 average with a .322 on base percentage and a total of 29 stolen bases.
