Saturday, Alex Cora (pictured) was released by the New York Mets and the Mets also optioned outfielder Jesus Feliciano to AAA Buffalo. In his 62 games with New York, 34-year-old Cora was hitting an average of .207. Had he made it for 80 games total with the New York Mets, he would have had a contract worth $2 million for 2011.
As for Feliciano, he had a batting average of .292 with four doubles, a single triple and two runs batted in during his 27 appearances with the Mets. He is in pursuit of an International League Batting Championship. He returns to AAA Buffalo from his second stint with the New York Mets.
In order to fill the roster sports of the released Cora and the demoted Feliciano, the New York Mets recalled outfielder Fernando Martinez as well as infielder Ruben Tejada.
21-year-old Martinez is hitting an average of .255 with 12 home runs and 33 runs batted in during his 68 appearances with the AAA Buffalo Bisons this year. Tejada has a single home run and 17 runs batted in along with his .280 hitting average with the AAA Buffalo Bisons this season. In addition, Tejada has already been part of the Mets this year playing in the place of shortstop Jose Reyes as well as second baseman Luis Castillo due to being on the DL with injuries. During these 35 appearances as a sub, Tejada had a .212 batting average.
After being scratched from the lineup just a few short minutes prior to Friday’s game at AAA Buffalo, many had speculated the two may be in the midst of a trade; however, it seems that it not the case. The Mets have not released any official statement saying they were traded – they were only recalled. Now, they were both be in uniform for Saturday night’s game when the Mets go up against the Phillies.
