As arguably one of the most sought after free agents in this summer’s NBA free agent market, two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash will get plenty of offers from all over the league come July 1. There’s no question that Nash has been incredibly loyal to the Suns during his time in Phoenix and would almost certainly consider staying with the team to finish his Hall of Fame caliber career in the league, but a chance to win a championship elsewhere might be too tempting for the perennial All-Star.
Once Nash officially hits the free agent market, the teams that will most likely be interested in his services will be the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks and the Miami Heat. All three of these potential NBA title contenders will have limited flexibility in terms of offering a one or two year deal to Nash, but they provide the opportunity to play for a winner and one last shot at getting that elusive title before the superstar calls it quits.
With the recent emergence of Jeremy Lin, the Knicks might not be as interested as they once were as they intend to re-sign the up-and-comer this summer. The Lakers are also in a similar dilemma with the acquisition of Ramon Sessions who will most likely opt-out of his current deal to sign long-term. That leaves Miami as the most likely destination.
In an attempt to keep Nash for the last few years of his career, the Suns are prepared to offer a two-year deal worth $20 million. This deal will be without a doubt the lucrative of any deal that Nash will be offered after July 1. Some teams might try to get close to this number, but they won’t be contenders like the Heat, Lakers or Knicks.
