Once the Los Angeles Lakers were knocked out of the NBA playoffs last year by the eventual NBA champion Dallas Mavericks, 11-time NBA champion Phil Jackson decided it was time to retire. As arguably the greatest NBA head coach of all-time, Jackson left an unbelievably successful legacy behind and was thought to be done for good as an NBA head coach.
Despite only being away from the game for one season, Jackson appears to want to return to the NBA. It is uncertain at this point in time whether or not Jackson would like to coach again or come out of retirement to fill a different role for a team in the league.
Recently, it was rumored that Jackson had some interest in joining the Orlando Magic’s front office. Jackson’s role would be to help the team rebuild and it may have turned into a head coaching position with the team still looking for a replacement to the recently fired Stan Van Gundy.
With three-time Defensive Player of the Year Dwight Howard reportedly wanting out of Orlando via trade over the summer, the Magic would have to start from scratch once again. It is uncertain what the Magic can get in return for Howard, but it won’t be sufficient enough to maintain the squad as a legitimate playoff team.
The addition of Jackson was thought to be just what the doctor ordered for the struggling NBA franchise as he might bring balance for a team in chaos with an uncertain future.
Unfortunately, even though Jackson expressed some serious interest in joining the Magic, the Zen Master has decided not to join the Magic’s front office as he is reportedly pursuing another position in the NBA. There’s no telling what that other position is as he may very well return to coaching or pursue another front office position.
