As one of the most controversial and most-watched teams in the NBA this season, the New York Knicks franchise has been a roller coaster this year with extreme highs and depressing lows. It must be a hard to be a Knicks fan this season with no telling what will happen from week to week whether it be Linsanity, a coach resigning, temperamental superstar or another big injury, there is just no predicting what direction this storied franchise is headed in.
The most recent news to come out of New York, before today that is, was the injury to forward Amare Stoudemire. Reportedly, Stoudemire will miss anywhere from two to four weeks with a bulging disk in his lower back. The All-Star caliber forward will not have surgery on his back, but with the amount of time out and the Knicks currently in the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference; this may very well be a season-ending injury.
As if the storylines in the Big Apples surrounding the New York Knicks were crazy enough or didn’t need anything to draw more attention to the team, it appears that Knicks legend Patrick Ewing would love a chance to coach his former team. Currently, Ewing is helping mentor Dwight Howard on the Orlando Magic’s coaching staff, but if given the opportunity in the offseason he’d jump at the chance to take the reins of the Knicks.
This news broke before Wednesday night’s game with the Orlando Magic taking on the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Ewing went on to say this about how he’d handle the spotlight via Ian O’Connor of ESPNNewYork.com:
“I played here. I know the ins and outs of New York, the media, the fans.”
As of right now, it appears that interim head coach Mike Woodson is making quite the impression and may very well have the job to lose. If Woodson can help lead this team to a deep run in the playoffs there is a good chance he’ll get the job moving forward. There is also the Phil Jackson factor, though.
